This is a reflection on the keynote speech by Dr. Denise Furlong at the WAESOL Conference in 2023, with a focus on shifting towards more asset-based language in our field. The author also presents the case for a new asset-based term to replace a deficit-based term commonly used when describing language learners.

Lauren Beven, LaurenSpeak English, Whatcom Literacy Council

Lauren Beven has been honored to work for decades in ESOL education. She uses her background in linguistics and her compassion for others to build collaborative learning programs. She also specializes in instructional design theory applications. Lauren coordinates the ELL Program at Whatcom Literacy Council, delivering workshops for English tutors and developing learning programs for adult refugees and immigrants in Bellingham. She also develops and delivers online English learning programs. In her free time, she is an advocate and activist for accessibility and gender equity.
