Assistive technologies to support English learners

Summary

With the rapid development of technology, various assistive technologies have emerged to help English Learners (ELs) improve their skills and to benefit teachers by making content more accessible. Microsoft have embedded assistive technology innovations into their popular Office productivity suite, which users are often unaware of. Many of these contain beneficial accessibility features. This article discusses eight different types of assistive technologies that are integrated into Microsoft tools.

George Zhao, Western Washington University

George Zhao, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Instructional Technology at the Woodring College of Education, Western Washington University.  His research interests include assistive technologies, Massive Open Online Courses, gamification, and Digital Storytelling for inclusive education.  He also serves as the Co-chair of the Woodring Technology Committee.  You may contact him at Zhaog@wwu.edu.

Yan Yan, Lamar University

Yan Yan, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Literacy Education in the College of Education and Human Development at Lamar University. Her research interests center on K-12 English Learners (ELs)’ reading and literacy development, instruction, and teacher preparation for teaching ELs. She focuses on developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based literacy intervention programs that emphasize improving ELs’ reading comprehension, words knowledge, and writing skills.
