Summary

This article illustrated the importance and benefits of building virtual connection between teachers and students in online classrooms. The idea “The Four Connections” was introduced in the article: 1) Interact with Students by Name, 2) Check-In Regularly, 3) Schedule 1-to-1 Meetings, 4) Practice Paradox. Detailed examples of how to utilize “The Four Connections” in the online ESL classrooms in Higher Education are provided.

Qiqi Cheng, Gonzaga University

Qiqi Cheng (She/Her) is currently an online ESL instructor at Spokane Community College and a graduate student at Gonzaga University pursuing her master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). She has been teaching English in various educational sectors (e.g., Adult Education, Distance Education, and K-12 Education) for four years now both domestically and internationally. Her current teaching interest and skill are technological intervention in language and literacy education. She endeavors to continue pursuing innovative pedagogies to enhance the learning experience for multilingual learners with varying language proficiency levels and backgrounds.
