Novel Study Using Google Meet and Audiobooks

Summary

This article highlights the challenges faced in conducting novel studies in a diverse fifth-grade ELA classroom and proposes an effective solution utilizing Google Meet with Breakout rooms and audiobooks. By incorporating high-interest novels and bilingual approaches, educators facilitate language development, comprehension, and engagement. The method fosters individualized learning, boosts student confidence, and maximizes class time efficiency. Despite pandemic disruptions, this strategy proved a valuable tool, promoting language acquisition and a love for reading among students.

Kara Holler-Perez

Kara Holler-Perez teaches Fifth Grade Language Arts  in New Jersey. Kara holds a Bachelors in Elementary Education from Montclair State University and a  Masters of Arts, English Language Learning from Western Governors University. Kara has been working with the Multilingual Learning Community for over 10 years in a diverse district. She is passionate about education and working towards equity for all learners regardless of their language experience. Gillian Ober

Gillian Ober is an English as a Second Language Educator in New Jersey, as well as an adjunct professor in the Department of Education at Georgian Court and Monmouth Universities. Gillian holds a Masters of Teaching from Monmouth University as well as a Masters of Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University. Specializing in working with Newcomer and Multilingual Learners, she is passionate about advocacy work for this unique community of learners. She has presented at conferences like WAESOL and NJTESOL, and looks forward to more opportunities to present at conferences centered on the needs of Multilingual Learners.
