Kali Ortiz, Western Washington University

Kali Ortiz is a current Master’s of Education student at Western Washington University, who is obtaining her degree in Language and Literacy, as well as receiving the Media and Digital Literacy Certificate. As a first-generation and Latinx college student, her education is a cultivation of her family, community, and her aspirations. Through her Masters Program, she has reflected on the important role she has as an educator. Endorsed in elementary education, her journey as an educator has been one of continuous growth, shaped by a deep understanding of the importance of using equitable language and evaluating who benefits from certain systems or practices. Embracing her role as dream maker, she wants to encourage and empower students to achieve their goals. She believes that incorporating students' identities into the curriculum and making connections to their lived experiences is a necessity when fostering an inclusive and empowering learning environment for all students.
